This latest snowstorm may not have any of us thinking spring, but it is right around the corner (really, it is!). Spring is the busiest home buying season in New England and you’ll want to be prepared as you embark on this search. The best way to start is a list.
Many home buyers make a list of requirements and are determined to find a home that checks off every item. This stance can limit search options, leave you behind the competition, and wondering if you’ll ever find a home. This video from realtor.com, highlights four items to consider compromising on to help your money go further.
Location
Dreaming of living in a certain spot? You may just have to trade off space and price. If you are willing to be more flexible and look at surrounding areas or towns, you may be able to get more for your money.
Square Footage
If location is key but you have a set budget, looking at homes with less square footage could have you moving into the neighborhood of your dreams. Think about it…are you willing to skip that extra bedroom or bathroom?
Yard Size
Do you need a yard the size of a football field? Better yet, are you prepared to maintain a lawn that size? Any amount of outdoor space, even if it’s small, can become an oasis. If you go for a smaller yard, you may have more purchasing power.
Architecture
If you are adamant about having a certain style home, it could significantly limit home buying options in your budget. Do you need to live in a Craftsman-style home, or would a California colonial or New England farmhouse suit you just fine? Be open to other options, and go and see a house before you pass judgment.
With these items in mind, sit down and make your wish list, but remember being flexible about each item may just lead you to the home of your dreams.
