Memorial Day weekend typically means a getaway for most. While the long weekend this year, will still usher in the warmer and longer days of summer; it will look a whole lot different. Take it from me, though; there are still things to do and places to go.

After writing our May 7th post and in desperate need of a break from our home (I know you can all relate!), my family of four decided to hit the road and the trail. We travelled North from our Hampton, NH home to one of our favorite spots…the White Mountains in NH.

First, we did our research ahead of time, looking at the NH State Park’s website to see what would be open and guidelines for our trek. Number one priority, making sure parking areas would be available and trails were open. We also searched for trails that could be good starter hikes for the season, and places we might be able to grab a bite or treat.

Since NH is just opening up, many restaurants up North were still doing take out only. We saw signs of hope for restaurant dining along our journey, however; spying newly set up outdoor seating areas and a few patrons to these establishments.

To be safe for this trip, we packed snacks and lunch and planned to get a treat following our hike. A reward for a day on the trail! Other essentials we brought with us: hand sanitizer; no rinse hand wash; plenty of paper towels, napkins and a towel; suntan lotion; and bug spray. We did forget masks, which ended up not being necessary for this trip. I would recommend adding them to the list, just in case you find yourself wanting to visit a store while on the road.

We chose Black Cap Mountain in Conway, NH; mainly because we knew the views from the top would be breathtaking. The trail was not too crowded, and people we passed were friendly while respecting social distancing guidelines. The view was well worth it. I love a warm spring day, as you look out to the snowy peaks of Mt. Washington.

We spent some time at the top to enjoy the view, mountain air and just relax. While at the top there was enough space to spread out from other hikers. We wrapped up and headed back to town where we were able to enjoy an ice cream, and we had our choice of spots because many of these businesses are take out windows only.

It was the perfect end to a wonderful day…our little escape! So if you have been contemplating a day away, I’d say don’t hesitate, just do your research and be prepared. You’ll be happy you decided to. I know I am!

(Note: I know you may be wondering, what if we have to use the bathroom? Some rest stops and welcome centers were closed; however porta potties were available in several spots for emergencies.)

With warmer weather and thoughts of COVID-19 restrictions loosening in the coming weeks, we are all eager to get outside. While safety guidelines for outdoor activities will remain in place, there will be opportunities to enjoy the outdoors safely. These will include wearing face masks, washing hands and social distancing. Things we are all familiar with following weeks of practice.

Now where to go, what to do and will some of our favorite outdoor areas be open to the public? We are all pondering these same questions, so we set out on the web to find some answers.

The first link we came across was not for our home states of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, but Ohio. Even though they are miles away, we still thought this list from Ohio’s Department of Health could be useful. Check out the link for things to do, both inside and out.

After reviewing this list, we decided to check out our State Park websites for updates. Many list guidelines so we can all share and enjoy our many outdoor spaces. They also list open and closed areas, and if reservations are needed before you head out. Definitely check these sites for more information.

Massachusetts State Parks

New Hampshire State Parks

Finally, another resource we came across with great information, particularly for our area because we are lucky enough to have rail trails for biking, walking and jogging, is Rails to Trails. This website provides updated information regarding these paths.

While getaways and vacation plans have been thwarted, now is a great time to get outside and enjoy spring in New England. We are fortunate enough to have beautiful coastlines and budding forests. Get outside and see for yourself; but remember, safety first, now and always! Be well!
